If you’re considering updating your cutlery, then you’ve come to the right place. Whether you want to impress your guests at an upcoming event, or you’ve just opened a new fancy restaurant, this site should tell you all you need to know about how to choose the right cutlery and how to look after it. The idea is that this site is informative yet brief at the same time. We could spend forever going into the finer details, but unless you are planning on starting up a cutlery factory, this site should provide you with more than enough information.

What To Go For

Your first move should be to make a decision on what type of cutlery to go for, either silver or stainless steel. Each have their advantages and disadvantages, the main being that silver cutlery looks better but is more difficult to maintain, and stainless steel cutlery is easier to maintain. Also, silver is a lot more expensive! If you are planning on entertaining guests on a regular basis, then you may lean towards a full silver service, but if it is just going to be a one off, why not get a top quality stainless steel cutlery set.

You then need to think about how much cutlery you need to buy. If you don’t already have a figure in mind, then have a think about how many people is the maximum you will be entertaining. Is it going to a regular thing or just a one off? If the latter, then opting to go and buy a full service may be a waste of money. It is easy to get carried away when buying cutlery, you realise there is a nice looking service item for pretty much anything imaginable, so you decide to get the lot. But then you realise, you’ve got this nice expensive ladle but you never use, you’ve got soup spoons but you never serve soup. If you just set out to buy cutlery, then try to stick to your initial plans. But if the plan is to put on formal events on a regular basis, then it could be a good idea to stock up on the lot.

Remember that if you entertain on a regular basis, buy two sets of knives and forks. Most people don’t think about this, but it means you don’t have to wash up in between courses. Also, in my house teaspoons always seem to go missing, and I don’t think I’m the only one. Buy more than you need, you’re better safe than sorry. If you’ve opted for a certain design of cutlery which is tricky to get hold of, then you might not be able to get one piece replacements. You are best off finding this out before you buy a cutlery set because it can be frustrating to realise it when it’s too late!

Maintenance

You probably won’t want to hear this, but you are far better washing your cutlery by hand than in the dishwasher. But since very few of us have the patience for it, most cutleries today are dishwasher safe.

Some tips:

-          remove stainless steel cutlery from the dishwasher right away

-          don’t soak your cutlery

-          do not mix stainless steel and silverware in the dishwasher

-          do not polish stainless steel using silver polish

-          store silver cutlery in an air-tight box or area when out not in use

-          avoid prolonged contact with acidic fruits, hot fat, vinegar and wine

-          spend most your time polishing the areas of silver cutlery which are in direct contact with the food
